Leadership and Teamwork

Public Speaking & Language Proficiency

During my internship at the Ecuadorian American Chamber of Commerce, I interviewed students from the Universidad de San Francisco about their international experience in Ecuador. Before interviewing these students I had to plan appropriately and practice. I improved my public speaking skills by articulating clearly, engaging with my audience, and thinking positively. As this video demonstrates, I am interviewing Nicole, a student from the University of Florida who did an exchange in Quito.

Communication

Flexibility and Organization

In the workforce and any situation, establishing communication is fundamental. Throughout various situations and my internship in Quito, Ecuador, I have experienced working in groups and working with students from different cultural backgrounds. Communication skills have taught me to grow from circumstances and have given me the opportunity to interact with people from diverse backgrounds. Due to my Hispanic background, I am bilingual and the two pictures above demonstrate interviewing students in Spanish. Not only did I enhance my language proficiency in Spanish, but I had the opportunity to engage with international students and experience being in a university campus in Latin America.

During various situations, I have learned to be flexible and organized. One of them was while I was interning abroad at the Ecuadorian American Chamber of Commerce. One of my projects abroad was recording and analyzing data from students in regard to Obama's program 100,000 Strong in the Americas. However, I had to realize contacting universities for interviews and networking in Latin America was going to take a while due to the Hispanic culture. Unlike the American culture, Hispanics work to live, are laid-back, are not punctual, and develop networking contacts based on trust. My attitude remained the same, regardless of the cultural differences. I integrated myself in the Hispanic culture and coordinated appointments with university staff with anticipation to interview students and send out surveys. Although I am used to the American schedule, I accustomed myself to a new schedule, culture, and eventually completed my project.

I have held leadership positions as a student ambassador and with my international experiences abroad. I find it very rewarding having these accomplishments in my life. As a leader, I have guided students to leave their comfort zone by going abroad and internationalizing their career. During my internship in Madrid, I researched, analyzed, and presented new social media and marketing ideas to my social media team. As a leader and working with my team or organization, I have created an inspiring version of the future for others.
